The Furry DIY

For this DIY project you will need:

1.) A pair of shoes! Any pair with a horizontal toe strap that could use some spicing up.

2.) Fabric; try not to choose a color that is too contrasting to the shoe. I say this because I used        black and definitely should have used a more neutral color. Also, make sure to chose something that won't stain your leather (or canvas/fabric depending on which shoe you've chosen). For example don't use velvet. Velvet = bad.

3.) Fur; I used recycled fur from a vintage jacket I once purchased from Value Village. RIP lion fur jacket. Your memory shall live on forever....

4.) Glue Gun; You could probably alson use crazy glue, or fabric glue. I chose to use a glue gun because mistakes are much more forgiving and you can re-apply heat if you need to make corrections...also...it's what I already had. Less money spent the better.

5.) Needle and thread; I used Gutermann thread because it has a far less chance of breaking (learned through trial and error) during the process.

6.) The desire to make you shoes awesome.

Before

After

*Ahem* Lets get started. Step 1:
Measure across the horizontal shoe strap and cut fabric that is double its width. Once your fabric strip's been cut, begin tightly sewing the fabric (to itself NOT THE SHOE). You want to be able to remove this embellishment if you so desire later on and not ruin your shoes. This fabric will provide a base so you can later attach your fur.

Step 2.
Depending on where you've sourced your fur, you might need to remove it's cotton backing. It's usually lightly stitched, so it should be fairly easy to remove.

Step 3.
Now that you've removed your backing, you can cut the fur into a strip that resembles the shape of the strap. I cut mine into a bit of a horseshoe shape to allow the fur to bunch at the toe. This gave me a bit more of a rounded result at the toe so that it completely covers the front of your toe.

Step 4.
This is the last step. Now's the time to heat up your glue gun and glue your fur to fabric the strap you've already attached to your shoe. Be careful the glue glue gun is effing hot. Lightly press down so it adheres, but you might have to blow on it a bit to cool it down before pressing firmly. Trust me, I've burnt myself many a time it's not fun.

*You might want to spend a little additional time trimming the fur to achieve a more spherical shape. It took me about 15 more mins to scrunch and turn in the sides to get perfect. If you mess up, you can always peel off the fur and re-apply fresh glue. Just be careful not to be too aggressive with the pulling, don't want to tear the fur.

Voila! Cest Fin!

Our DIY was so remarkable even Einstein had to try it.
Not bad Einstein, not bad at all.
